First, figure out how much money there is available to spend. Then decide how much of the car audio system needs to be replaced. At this point plan a budget - how much can you afford to spend? Therefore you can locate system components in your price range. Deciding what is most important in the car audio system and plan to spend more on the important items. Going over budget is the first and most common mistake car audio system buyers make.

Another thing to consider is how much of the car is going to need to be modified for your potential choices. For example, some speaker installation will require many modifications to be made to the car. Modifications will need to be made by a professional and therefore you will have to budget into the total cost of the car audio system parts as well as labor. Another car audio systems mistake is that the owner of the car does not think about the future. How long are you going to keep the car for? Will you sell the car with the new audio system or will you remove it before sale? Remember audio systems never increase the value of a car enough to balance

A regular car audio system refers to a manufacturer installed system. A custom car installation can involve anything from the upgrade of the radio to a total custom fit-out. Events are held where people compete for the loudest or most innovative systems.

The most common pieces of equipment are the radio/tape player/CD player/DVD Player called a Head unit, or a head deck. These components are likely to be upgraded with an after market product. Head unit technology has developed to include CD players with MP3, Ogg, WMA, AAC, and USB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Car audio systems can have line-in jacks and other equipment features like tape adaptors, and video touch screen that controlling; navigation, dvd movies, mp3 players, back up cameras, and other accessories......

Most modern cars have a CD player/ CD recorder, and and optional CD changer, which holds several CD's. Now the manufactures are offering DVD players and LCD screens. LCD screens are located and integrated into things that slide out and folds up, or the instrument panel and the DVD head unit. The screen might show video output for a navigation system, 3G cell phone or parking cameras.

Speakers are located in doors and rear shelves of a cars. High-end stereo systems often have speakers mounted in kick panels, to accommodate larger drivers and better controller placement. Before stereo radio was introduced, the most common speaker location was in the middle of the dashboard. High-end systems will have Component Speakers that have balanced tweeter, mid-range, and woofer settings. They are available in two speaker and three speaker combinations, and include an audio crossover to limit frequency ranges that the speakers must handle. This allows each cone to produce optimal frequency for maximum sound quality and volume. In addition subwoofers are provided for bass and sub bass, the lower the frequency the less the ear picks it up, but the vibration is more pronounced. Sub bass is omni-directional, meaning that the ear can't figure out where the sound is coming from.

Amplifiers

Amplifiers make power to drive the speakers. The amplifier is a very important component of a speaker system. It makes sure that the total power handling capacity of the speakers is adhered to. Amplifiers commonly come in two,four or six channels. Subwoofer amplifiers are mostly Mono Amplifiers. It is common that multiple channels are marked for the exclusive use in allowing for more than one channel to be used.

Capacitors

Capacitors are used to store energy for the amplifier. Capacitors are useful because they can reduce voltage loss to other components in a car. Large capacitors sometimes offset headlight and/or interior light dimming because of too little amp draw from the alternator. A capacitor is only good for an audio system trying to get too many amps from the electrical system. A capacitor doesn't provide more power, it just stores it. The alternator must have more than 20% amp power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a capacitor to be of benefit. About 0.5 farad of capacitance is needed for every 500 watts of power. A capacitor does not affect sound in any way. It is strictly for power conditioning.

Positioning of Subwoofer to Increase Your Car Audio System

If you want to get satisfaction for the subwoofer in your car, then one thing to note is that of placement. Here are tips to put your car subwoofer, in order to obtain maximum results.
First, adjust Depending on how hard you like your music it can be a curse or a blessing. Keeping the subwoofer in the trunk does not mean that the sound will be much quieter, as the material separating from the passenger car boot does not mean soundproofed and bass in the sound provided by a sub travel easy. It is important to remember that the cage should be appropriate as well. It is possible to get thin lines or small submarine that will minimize this problem, or a custom made bass box. If you’re struggling for space back there, then this may mean that you need to look into installing speakers elsewhere. It is more difficult to fit with a large subwoofer into other parts of your car, however, so if you are looking at 12 “subs or greater, then you may have to compromise on boot space. Volume damped by placing the subs in the boot.
If all that has been done and you think that the sound is interrupted, then you can make a small hole in the boot cover and disguise them with a thin material. This should allow the sound to come out more easily. Alternative position for your subs, if you believe that you do not want to put them in your boot, is to have them in the back seat passenger in the front windshield and rear – make sure they do not restrict your vision, which can be dangerous. This is a good position to dive smaller, like 8 “, and will give you great quality bass, although probably not going to make a shake road with power. In the end, it all depends on what you want out of your subwoofer.

Surround Your Sound

The first step to building a speaker box is to determine what size it needs to be. Your box should be just larger than your sound driver. Also you will need to pick a wood before you can begin production. Particle board is a good choice for this type of project because it is inexpensive and the sound interacts well with it.

Next cut a circle large enough for your driver. Mount the driver on the board by running screws through the holes on the edge of your driver. Cover theses with black speaker cloth, by stapling the cloth to the edges of the board. Make a hole on the back of the box so that you can run the wiring out. It is now time to put the rest of the box together.

It is a good idea to glue your box together and then add screws. This will make a sturdier box. Also before attaching the final panel, fill the box with insulation to help protect the sound. The more insulation use the more solid your sound will be. Polyfil makes a good choice for insulation and can be bought cheaply anywhere that sells craft supplies. Another good idea is to use a caulking agent on the edges. This will prevent sound escape. Your speakers are now ready to connect.

There are many ways to connect speakers. I feel the easiest is series mode. For this simply connect the red wire (positive) from the amplifier to the positive output on your speaker. Then connect the negative connection (this may be any one of an assortment of colors but the positive is always red) on that speaker to the positive connection on the next. Repeat this step until all speakers are connected. Connect the negative on the last speaker to the amplifier.

Building and installing a speaker box can be much easier than it seems. Go slowly and take it step by step. Soon you will find your done.

Car Audio Subwoofers

Therefore no matter what size subwoofer you have, it will fill that lower end that the midrange speakers can simply not produce. Due to their design and use, subwoofers are Omni-directional. This means that no matter which way they face you will still feel the force of the subwoofer, unlike midrange speakers for example, where you would not be able to gain benefit of all the detail and clarity they are able to produce if you are standing behind the actual speaker.



Through my experience with different subwoofers, I've found that subwoofers generally become more like tactile transducers as they get louder in essence, you end up feeling the bass more than being able to hear it. As a result, if you're someone that is going for sound quality over loudness, I would recommend using a smaller size subwoofer. Many audiophiles who concentrate on sound quality over sound pressure will choose a smaller size subwoofer as the cone area is much smaller, and as a result, a tighter bass is achieved and when married with a sealed enclosure, the end result will be a nice tight bass that will be precise and accurate while not attempting to crack your windows! However, those who prefer sound pressure will choose the biggest cone area they can fit in their car. Take for example Steve Meade; with regards to his subwoofer he was able to put 4 18 inch subwoofers. The result of these monster subs is that Steve is able to achieve a high SPL. It is apparent that Steve attempts to increase his sound quality by installing large midbass speakers as well as using high quality midrange and good quality tweeters, all manufactured by Rockford Fosgate.

For my system I was restricted for space, and that is what defined to an extent my choice of subwoofer. I needed to have amplifiers that would be as powerful as could be whilst being as small as possible while still trying to maintain a budget! As a result, I settled for the Alpine MRP-M500 and as you can probably tell from the name, the amp is capable of pushing out 500RMS at 2OHM. Sure you might be thinking there's plenty of choice with regards to a subwoofer but after running a 400 RMS Pioneer subwoofer in my previous system, I quickly learned that each sub sounds very different and although the Pioneer produce very good subwoofers, (my old Pioneer, now retired to my bedroom!) I found that they were not able to produce the sound I was after which is when I turned my eye to Kicker.

The Kicker L7, a subwoofer that has truly lived up to the reputation and hypes that goes along with it. Yes the first time someone told me they had an L7 as part of their setup I stared at them, blank faced and somewhat lost, but then they gave me a demo and WOW! Although it was not perfect for what I wanted it sounded great! Precise and Accurate as well and the best bit of it all, I found that if I gave it 500rms, although not reaching its potential, it would be more than happy.

For subwoofers, the enclosure is vital for the sub to perform to its best abilities. Although you'll see many subwoofer packages come with generic subwoofer boxes. While this is not an issue, it does somewhat hinder the performance of your sub. This is why I would recommend a custom made box. By their nature, custom boxes are much larger in size giving the subwoofer the air they require and many people choose to have a ported box, usually tuned to between 30 and 34 hertz. The benefit of this range of frequencies is that you're pretty much maximizing the output of the subwoofer without it becoming solely a transducer. For me, my box was tuned to 32Hz and the result was a sound that is pleasurable to hear as well as giving you the physical experience of moving air and I love it!

So in conclusion, subwoofers are just as important as any other speaker you have in your car if you want to enjoy the full spectrum of your sound, and after having a subwoofer in my car I can guarantee you all that I will, no matter what size, always have a subwoofer in my future cars!
